The European Commission referred Portugal to the Court of Justice of the European Union (EU) today due to failures in transposing rules for the promotion of renewable energy, it was announced today.
According to information from the European Commission, Portugal (as well as Greece and Malta) did not transpose Directive 2023/2413 into national legislation, referring to the acceleration of the energy transition to renewable sources and the development of clean energy in all sectors of the economy.

The reinforced rules introduce measures to promote the expansion of renewables, such as facilitating energy system integration through electrification and renewable hydrogen, and adopting safeguards to ensure more sustainable bioenergy production.
