Iran War: Trump says Merz “doesn’t know what he is talking about” (with video)

US President Donald Trump publicly criticized German Chancellor Friedrich Merz today, claiming the leader “doesn’t know what he is talking about” regarding the ongoing conflict with Iran. This sharp rebuttal followed remarks by Merz questioning the efficacy and clarity of Washington’s current diplomatic strategy in the region.

During a debate with students in Marsberg on Monday, Merz expressed deep concern that the United States lacks a coherent exit plan. He suggested that Iranian leadership is successfully out-negotiating the Americans, leaving the West in a difficult and humiliating position.

The Chancellor drew parallels to past conflicts such as Afghanistan and Iraq, noting that while getting involved in such wars is relatively easy, successfully exiting them is notoriously difficult. Merz argued that the current stagnation in peace talks proves that Iran is not negotiating in good faith.

Trump countered these accusations via the social media platform Truth, arguing that Merz is misguided for appearing indifferent to the existential risk of a nuclear-armed Iran. The President asserted that his actions are necessary to prevent the world from being held hostage by a nuclear-capable Tehran.

The President further attacked the Chancellor’s credibility by citing the precarious state of Germany’s economy. This economic strain is largely linked to soaring fuel prices caused by Iran’s blockade of the Strait of Hormuz following the February 28 US-Israel military operation against Tehran’s missile and drone capabilities.

Despite the diplomatic friction, Chancellor Merz reiterated that Germany remains willing to help secure the Strait of Hormuz. He offered to deploy naval assets to ensure the stability of global oil supplies, provided that all active hostilities in the region cease first.
