Taylor Swift trademarks voice amid AI abuse (with video)

This strategic move is widely viewed by legal experts as an attempt to establish a firmer perimeter around her voice and likeness, providing a defense against the proliferation of unauthorized AI-generated deepfakes

Pop superstar Taylor Swift has taken a proactive step to secure her intellectual property in the age of generative artificial intelligence by filing new trademark applications. According to filings submitted to the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office by her entity, TAS Rights Management, the singer is seeking to protect specific audio clips and a distinct image of herself.

This strategic move is widely viewed by legal experts as an attempt to establish a firmer perimeter around her voice and likeness, providing a defense against the proliferation of unauthorized AI-generated deepfakes that have increasingly misappropriated her identity for false advertising, political endorsements, and explicit content.

The trademark applications, lodged last Friday according to Reuters, include two distinct audio snippets featuring Swift promoting a hypothetical album titled “The Life of a Showgirl,” along with a photograph of the artist performing onstage in a sequined outfit while holding a pink guitar.

While representatives for Swift and her legal team have not commented on the specific strategy behind these filings, the move aligns with a growing trend among high-profile celebrities attempting to exert greater control over their digital identities.

Actor Matthew McConaughey recently adopted a similar approach, emphasizing to the Wall Street Journal that the goal is to establish clear ownership standards where consent and attribution are prioritized in an AI-driven environment.

Trademark attorney Josh Gerben, who first identified the filings, noted that this strategy is designed to provide an additional layer of defense where traditional “Right of Publicity” laws might fall short.

Historically, artists have relied heavily on copyright law to safeguard their recorded music; however, AI technology now allows bad actors to synthesize entirely new content that mimics an artist’s voice without utilizing existing recordings, effectively bypassing traditional copyright protections.

As Variety has previously reported regarding the rapid evolution of AI regulation in the entertainment industry, these trademark registrations represent a novel legal experiment that has yet to be fully tested in court, potentially setting a new standard for how celebrities safeguard their personas against synthetic media.

By registering a specific spoken voice and a highly stylized visual, Swift’s team aims to gain more robust grounds to pursue claims against manipulated content that evokes her likeness.

Gerben suggests that while the registration of a celebrity’s actual voice as a trademark is uncharted territory, it could become a vital tool as technology continues to blur the lines between reality and simulation.

As this legal strategy unfolds, it remains to be seen whether such trademark protections will successfully deter the creation of deepfakes, but the filings undoubtedly signal a significant escalation in the battle to reclaim autonomy over digital identity in the age of advanced artificial intelligence.
