A violent 7.4-magnitude earthquake struck northern Japan today, announced the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA), which issued a tsunami warning predicting waves that could reach three meters.
The earthquake occurred at 4:53 PM local time (8:53 AM in Lisbon) in Pacific waters off the coast of Iwate Prefecture. The tremors were so violent that they shook large buildings as far away as Tokyo, several hundred kilometers away. Authorities did not immediately report any casualties or damage.
