Mozambique’s Prime Minister Maria Benvinda Levi has called for greater investment in alternative energy sources to accelerate nationwide electrification, particularly in off-grid areas.

Speaking in Maputo during the swearing-in of the new leadership of the Energy Fund (Funae), Levi stressed the need to expand electricity generation through renewable solutions such as solar, hydro, wind, and mini-grids.

She urged the newly appointed head of Funae, Mety Gondola, to prioritize access for communities beyond the national grid, highlighting the transformative impact of electricity on education, business, and quality of life.

Levi noted that around 65% of the population in Mozambique currently has access to electricity, with off-grid systems playing a crucial role in expanding coverage. She emphasized that these systems will remain essential to achieving universal access, especially in rural and remote regions.

The Prime Minister also called for stronger coordination with development partners and the private sector to mobilize investment and meet government electrification targets set for 2029.

Beyond energy, Levi also oversaw the appointment of new leadership at the Instituto Superior de Ciências de Saúde (ISCISA), reinforcing the government’s focus on improving healthcare training and aligning it with national needs.

The push for alternative energy reflects Mozambique’s ambition to leverage its renewable potential and position itself as a key producer of clean energy in the region.
