Mozambique: rainfall caused 298 deaths since October

The death toll in the current rainy season in Mozambique has risen to 298, with over one million people affected since October, according to the National Institute for Disaster Management and Risk Reduction (INGD).

According to the INGD database updated until the end of Monday, two more deaths were recorded in about 24 hours, affecting 1,024,390 people (an increase of 10,000 from the previous report) in the current rainy season—which continues until the end of April—corresponding to 233,998 families, with 17 missing and 351 injured.

The passage of Cyclone Gezani in Inhambane on February 13–14 caused four more deaths and affected 9,040 people, according to INGD data.

In total, 21,719 houses were partially destroyed, 10,236 completely destroyed, and 206,379 flooded during this rainy season.

Additionally, 304 healthcare facilities, 104 places of worship, and 724 schools were affected in less than six months.

The INGD data also indicate that 267,438 hectares of agricultural land were lost, affecting 355,070 farmers, and 531,068 animals died, including cattle, goats, and poultry.

Furthermore, 8,434 kilometers of roads, 50 bridges, and 237 aqueducts were impacted during this rainy season.

Since October, the Mozambican disaster management institute has activated 195 accommodation centers, which have hosted 139,284 people. Currently, 64 centers remain active (about 50 more in the last week due to recent floods), accommodating at least 30,954 people, with 7,214 people having been rescued.
