Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi on Monday urged the parties involved in the Iran conflict to address the “root causes,” during a meeting with the UK National Security Advisor Jonathan Powell in Beijing.
Wang emphasized that prolonging the war will only worsen the damage and consequences, advocating a return to a political solution through dialogue and negotiation, according to a statement from Chinese diplomacy.
The conflict pits Iran against the United States and Israel since late February, when Washington and Tel Aviv launched attacks on Iranian territory, to which Tehran responded with offensives against several Gulf countries and U.S.-associated positions in the region.
The Strait of Hormuz, through which about 20% of the world’s oil passes, was blocked by Iran in response to the offensive.

Also on Monday, China’s special envoy for the Middle East, Zhai Jun, warned of “unbearable consequences for all parties” if the closure of this route continues.
Wang described the visit of UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer to China in January as “successful” and “historic,” receiving positive feedback from various sectors and international public opinion.
According to the Chinese Foreign Minister, this demonstrates that the development of a comprehensive, stable, and long-term strategic partnership between China and the UK is “inevitable” and reflects the will of the people.
Wang added that if both sides move in the same direction, they can achieve mutual benefits, implement agreed-upon measures, strengthen exchanges, and deepen cooperation to promote stable bilateral relations.
Powell stated that London is willing to work with Beijing to implement the results of Starmer’s visit, enhance communication and cooperation, and develop a comprehensive, stable, and lasting strategic partnership.
