At least two people have died, one was injured, three are missing and 1,355 have been affected over the past 72 hours by rains that destroyed more than 230 homes in Mozambique’s Tete province, local authorities reported today.
Data from the Emergency Operations Centre shows that in the past 72 hours, at least two people were swept away by the Luia river in the Chifunde district, with 189 homes partially destroyed and 47 totally destroyed, and accommodation centres opened for displaced residents.
“We need to be attentive to sanitation and we need to be attentive to health,” said INGD president Luísa Meque at the Emergency Operations Centre meeting, calling for resources to be deployed to accommodation centres.

The death toll in the current rainy season has risen to 280, with nearly 915,000 people affected since October. A total of 16,180 homes have been partially destroyed, 6,528 totally destroyed and 189,392 flooded, while 303 health units, 84 places of worship and 722 schools have been affected over five and a half months.
Some 267,205 hectares of agricultural land have been lost, affecting 351,155 farmers, and 531,058 animals have died. Road infrastructure losses include 8,435 kilometres of roads, 49 bridges and 237 culverts. Since October, 157 accommodation centres have been activated — 27 still active, seven more than last week — currently housing at least 6,839 people, with 6,931 people having required rescue.
