Two factions of Guinea-Bissau’s historic PAIGC party today announced they will hold the ordinary congress to elect a new leader on different dates, breaking from the event originally scheduled for November.
A group of discontented leaders and members who call themselves a “reflection group” had already publicly called for the congress to be brought forward, citing the fact that African Party for the Independence of Guinea and Cape Verde (PAIGC) president Domingos Simões Pereira is under house arrest.

The group today announced it has scheduled the 11th ordinary congress for May 9 and 10, the same day that the PAIGC’s permanent commission announced it would convene the Central Committee on March 28 “with a view to convening the 11th Ordinary Congress” with a recommendation to set a date “between late June and early July 2026.”
