UEFA has decided to fine Real Madrid €15,000 “for racist and/or discriminatory behaviour by its supporters” during their home match against Benfica in the Champions League, it was announced today.

The decision by UEFA’s Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body (CEDB) relates to the second leg of the play-off for access to the round of sixteen, played on February 25, which Real Madrid won 2-1 and which ended with Benfica’s elimination.

In addition to the €15,000 fine, UEFA also ordered a partial closure of Real Madrid’s stadium — specifically 500 seats adjacent to the lower south stand — with the punishment suspended for a one-year probationary period.

The ban on those 500 seats for a Real Madrid UEFA competition match will only be enforced if the club reoffends within one year with racist and/or discriminatory behaviour by its supporters.
