Brazil’s Federal Police (PF) dismantled a network today accused of illegally accessing confidential information on Supreme Court judges and other authorities from government databases and selling it online.

According to information released by the press, among the judges whose data were illegally obtained is Alexandre de Moraes, the rapporteur of the case that culminated in the 27-year prison sentence of former president Jair Bolsonaro for attempted coup d’état.

According to the PF statement, the criminal organisation was “specialised in the illegal obtaining, alteration, commercialisation and dissemination of personal and sensitive data from government and private databases.”

The hacker network began to be investigated last year, after authorities discovered an unofficial database online fed with information illegally extracted from government systems and offering for sale the personal data of Supreme Court judges.

“Four search and seizure warrants and five temporary arrest warrants, issued by the Supreme Court, are being executed in the states of São Paulo, Tocantins and Alagoas,” the statement reads.

Members of the network may face charges of criminal association, unauthorised access to computer systems, aggravated theft through fraud, data corruption and money laundering.
