Controversy in the Benfica-Real Madrid match: Prestianni denies racism accusations, Henry and Luisão support Vini Jr

The victory of Real Madrid over Benfica (1-0) tonight in the playoff match for access to the round of 16 of the Champions League was marked by a serious controversy outside the sporting context, after Vinícius Júnior denounced alleged racist insults from Gianluca Prestianni.

Vinicius Jr complained immediately after the decisive goal, leading to the activation of UEFA’s anti-racism protocol and the interruption of the match for approximately 12 minutes. The incident generated tension on the field and in the stands, at a Estádio da Luz under intense international scrutiny.

Hours after the incident, Gianluca Prestianni turned to social media to deny the accusations. The young Argentine assured that he had never uttered any racial insults and stated that his words were misinterpreted in the heat of the game. The player also expressed regret over the threats he received after the final whistle, reiterating that he “has never been racist” and that he rejects any form of discrimination.

So far, Benfica has not released an official detailed position, referring clarifications to the referee’s report and the ongoing investigation by UEFA.

The case quickly crossed borders and prompted reactions from historical figures in football. In a television commentary, Thierry Henry expressed solidarity with Vinícius Júnior, emphasizing that he understands the frustration of the Real Madrid player.

“I can identify with what Vinícius is going through. I’ve been through this many times in my career. Many times it’s your word against that of the other person,” stated the former French international, adding that Prestianni’s gesture of covering his mouth during the incident raises doubts that need to be clarified.

Henry also argued that, in situations of this gravity, it is essential that there be clear accountability: “If nothing happened, then let it be said transparently.”

Luisão, the former captain of Benfica, also reacted publicly through social media, standing by Vinícius Júnior. The former central defender expressed that he was “ashamed” of the incident and classified it as a racist act, appealing for the club and Portuguese football to live up to their historical values.

“The Benfica jersey is too big. Racism has no place in football or in society,” wrote Luisão in a message that generated strong impact among fans and former players.

The UEFA has confirmed that it is analyzing the official reports of the game and the available footage. If the existence of racist insults is confirmed, the disciplinary process could result in individual and/or collective sanctions.

Meanwhile, the sports focus shifts to the second leg of the tie, but the controversy promises to continue marking current events at a time when European football is facing increasing pressure to effectively combat racism on and off the pitches.
