The double earthquake that struck Venezuela on June 24 has caused the death of 134 Portuguese citizens and people of Portuguese descent, with 12 more still missing, according to the latest count released today by Portugal’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MNE).
Among the 134 Portuguese citizens and people of Portuguese descent who died, of whom 106 were adults and 28 were minors, 114 also held Venezuelan nationality. Portugal’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs also stated that 12 Portuguese citizens remain missing at this time.
The previous count, from Friday, reported 133 Portuguese citizens and people of Portuguese descent dead and 21 missing. Two earthquakes of magnitude 7.2 and 7.5 shook the north of the country on June 24, particularly the coastal state of La Guaira, near the capital Caracas.

The death toll following the double earthquake that struck Venezuela just over a month ago stands at 5,546, according to the most recent official data, while the number of injured remains at 16,740. The double earthquake occurred 200 kilometers from Caracas, less than a minute apart, and was followed by hundreds of aftershocks, according to the United States Geological Survey.
Several countries, including Portugal and other European Union member states, sent search and rescue teams to Venezuela.
