During a press conference, officials revealed that Valente ended his life, and Mayor Brett Smiley expressed relief for the Providence community. There is no evidence of accomplices, although authorities have not yet established a motive for the shootings.
Valente attended Brown University’s physics program briefly in 2000 before withdrawing. He spent considerable time in the engineering building targeted in the Brown shooting. Authorities noted his permanent residency in the U.S. since 2017.
Law enforcement linked Valente to both cases after confirming he and Loureiro studied in the same academic program in Portugal during the 1990s. Investigators tracked Valente by utilizing surveillance footage and tips from the public, ultimately locating him at a rented storage facility.
Federal authorities found Valente’s body next to firearms in the unit, which he rented shortly after the MIT professor’s death. The investigation revealed he had also rented a car observed near the Brown University campus prior to the shootings.
The tragic events began with the Brown University shooting, which resulted in the deaths of 19-year-old Ella Cook and 18-year-old MukhammadAziz Umurzokov. The attack unfolded during a study session in an unsecured auditorium, heightening concerns over safety in the community.
