The epicenter was located about 80 kilometers off the coast of Aomori Prefecture at a depth of approximately 54 kilometers. The quake triggered tsunami warnings in several coastal prefectures, leading to the evacuation of around 90,000 residents. Recorded tsunami waves ranged from 20 to 70 centimeters.
Emergency services were deployed immediately to assist those affected, search for potentially trapped people and provide medical care to the injured. Rail services were temporarily suspended and many households lost electricity.
Authorities have warned of possible aftershocks and urged residents to remain vigilant, secure heavy furniture, prepare emergency kits and follow official instructions. Seismologists highlighted that the quake serves as a reminder of the constant seismic risk in Japan, particularly along the Pacific coast.
The government continues to monitor the situation closely and rescue operations are ongoing as the country assesses the full scale of the damage and works to support affected communities.
