EU-US goods trade surplus grows in 2025 but at slower pace

The EU mainly imported pharmaceutical and medicinal products (17%), petroleum and related products (11.2%), and energy-generating machinery and equipment (9.4%) from the US.

The goods trade surplus between the European Union and the United States increased in 2025 to 199.6 billion euros, representing a slowdown compared with the previous year, Eurostat reported on Wednesday.

According to the data released by the statistical office of the European Union, the goods trade surplus rose from 198.2 billion euros in 2024, but at a slower rate than the year before.

Last year, the EU exported 554.0 billion euros worth of goods to the US, an increase of 3.4% compared to 2024, while imports reached 354.4 billion euros, up 4.8% year-on-year, despite the tariff regime imposed by the White House on goods originating from the EU.

Eurostat noted that in the first quarter of 2025, EU exports and imports to the US increased significantly. In the second quarter, there was a sharp decline in trade flows, followed by a slight increase in imports and a small decrease in exports between July and September 2025. In the fourth quarter, both categories recorded a drop.

Pharmaceutical and medicinal products accounted for the largest share of EU exports (29%), followed by motor vehicles (7.5%) and machinery and industrial equipment (5.9%).

In July 2025, the European Commission and the United States reached a political trade agreement establishing a tariff framework with a 15% ceiling on most European exports to the US and the removal of many US tariffs on European industrial products.
