Macau inmate population with slight drop as larger new prison inaugurated

Macau’s inmate population reached 1,326 at the end of 2024, a slight 2.1 per cent year-on-year drop, as the city completed a major overhaul of its correctional system with the inauguration of a new high-capacity prison in Coloane, according to the Correctional Services Bureau’s annual report.

Men accounted for the vast majority of inmates, with 1,093 male and 233 female prisoners in custody. The data also showed a diverse prison population: 597 inmates were from mainland China, 411 from Macau, 158 from foreign countries, 99 from Hong Kong and eight from Taiwan.

Last year marked a significant turning point for the city’s correctional infrastructure. In November, authorities opened the new Coloane Prison, a 76,000-square-metre facility capable of housing up to 2,704 inmates.
