Currently, a single-entry visa to Japan costs JPY3,000 (US$19.5), while a multiple-entry visa costs JPY6,000 (US$39). These fees remain far lower than those charged by many Western countries.
In addition to the planned visa fee hike, Japan’s ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) is also discussing an increase in the so-called “departure tax” imposed on travelers leaving the country. The proposed revision would triple the current rate from JPY1,000 ($6.50) per person to JPY3,000 (US$19.5).
Meanwhile, several local governments are introducing their own measures to control visitor numbers. Kyoto City, one of Japan’s most popular tourist destinations, announced plans to significantly raise its accommodation tax from March 2026. Depending on hotel grade, the levy could reach as high as JPY10,000 (US$65) per person per night.
These initiatives highlight Japan’s growing efforts to strike a balance between reaping economic benefits from tourism and easing the pressure on local residents and cultural sites.
