NBA Legend Tim Hardaway took part in a community outreach event on Oct. 10 at Fuhong Society of Macau’s Pou Choi Centre, distributing boxed lunches and health kits as part of the “NBA Cares x Sands Cares Community Impact Week.”
Impact Week ran alongside The NBA China Games 2025 at The Venetian Arena and aimed to channel the influence of sport into tangible community support.
About 240 participants joined the outreach event at Pou Choi Centre, including representatives from NBA Cares’ “Her Time to Play” programme, volunteers from the Yao Foundation, Sands Cares Ambassadors, and Grant Chum, Chief Executive Officer and Executive Director of Sands China Ltd.
Attendees toured the centre to learn about its services and vocational programmes before distributing boxed lunches to 200 local residents in need.
The boxed lunch distribution also supported the centre’s Corner of Portuguese Cuisine vocational catering programme, which offers hands-on training to individuals recovering from mental health challenges and helps them build confidence through real-world work experience.
Grant Chum commented on the initiative’s purpose and impact: “While bringing a high-profile international sports event to Macao, Sands Cares and NBA Cares have jointly organised a boxed lunch distribution initiative, inviting NBA Legend Tim Hardaway into the community to bring warmth to local underprivileged residents. This initiative also supports the catering vocational training programme for people in mental health recovery run by Fuhong Society of Macau. We firmly believe that sports have the power to unite people and inspire hope. Through the influence of NBA Legends, we aim to raise public awareness and compassion for vulnerable groups, infusing positive energy into the community and fostering a caring, harmonious society.”
Maria de Fatima, president of the general assembly of Fuhong Society of Macau, added: “Our heartfelt gratitude goes to NBA Cares and Sands Cares for bringing the vibrant spirit of the NBA into the community by organising the boxed lunch distribution event, extending care and compassion to the underprivileged and spreading warmth and blessings throughout society.”
The five-day impact week (Oct. 8–12) featured several community events—including a school basketball exchange, a “Her Time to Play” clinic, and a community carnival—bringing NBA players and legends into direct engagement with local NGOs, students and residents.
These activities form part of Sands China’s broader Sands Cares corporate citizenship programme, which leverages large-scale events to deliver community support and promote vocational and social inclusion initiatives.
