On October 11th, the provincial legislature’s standing committee accepted Wang’s resignation and appointed Meng as vice governor and acting governor, paving the way for his formal election during the ongoing session of the 14th Guangdong People’s Congress.
Born in September 1965 in Linyi, Shandong Province, Meng holds a PhD in economics and began his career in 1986. He has extensive experience in both economic and local government administration. Early in his career, he served as director of the Shandong Department of Commerce, and later as mayor and party secretary of Yantai City. In 2017, he became mayor of Qingdao.
In September 2020, Meng was transferred to Inner Mongolia, where he served as a member of the regional Party Standing Committee and party secretary of Baotou. The following year, he was promoted to deputy party secretary of the autonomous region while continuing as Baotou’s party chief.
Since 2022, Meng has served as deputy party secretary of Guangdong and party secretary of Shenzhen. In September this year, he was named party secretary of the Guangdong provincial government, before being formally elected governor this week.
