Cape Verde seeing declines in birth, fertility rates

Cabo Verde has seen a decline in birth and fertility rates, according to the latest data for 2023 released on Wednesday by the archipelago's National Statistics Institute (INE).

“In 2023, there were 6,760 live births, representing a reduction of 1,287 births compared to 2022. This decrease reflects a downward trend in the birth rate in Cabo Verde,” which is also reflected in the reduction in the respective rate, which “fell from 16 to 13 live births per thousand inhabitants,”according to the “Vital Statistics 2023” bulletin.

The fertility rate, the number of live births registered per thousand women of childbearing age (15 to 49 years), “also confirms this downward trend, falling from 77.5 to 52.1 per thousand in 2023, the lowest figure recorded in the entire period analysed (2016-2023)”, according to the INE.

The average age of mothers is on an upward trajectory, “rising from 26.2 years in 2016 to 27.9 years in 2023”. Still with regard to births, in terms of neonatal mortality (deaths of children under 28 days per thousand live births), there was an increase from 10 to 11 per thousand in 2023.

The infant and child mortality rate (deaths of children under 5 per thousand live births) improved, falling from 15.4 to 14.5 per thousand in 2023.

The INE publication summarises statistical information on births, marriages and deaths based on data recorded by the Registry, Notary and Identification Services (RNI) and also shows that “5.9% of registrations were made without paternal identification, with the district of Maio having the highest proportion (14.4%)”.

The bulletin also indicates that in 2023, there were 2,925 deaths in Cabo Verde, representing a decrease of 107 deaths compared to 2022. “Consequently, the crude mortality rate (deaths per 1,000 inhabitants) followed the same trend, falling from six to 5.9 per thousand in 2023.

Also according to INE, in 2023 there were 2,435 marriages, corresponding to a slight reduction of 19 compared to 2022.
