The officer, who works at the Ma On Shan police station, called his station last Wednesday, August 27th, and reported that he had been taken to a scam compound in Cambodia. The officer is now safe, and the Hong Kong Security Bureau will send personnel to the area to help.
According to Hong Kong media reports, the male officer told his superior that his mother was seriously injured in a car accident in Guangxi and he needed to take leave to care for her. However, after entering mainland China on August 22nd, he went missing. He did not return to Hong Kong, but instead traveled from Guangxi to Cambodia.
The officer was released from the scam compound after showing them his Hong Kong police warrant card. After escaping, he called the Ma On Shan police station for help. The police station’s report room received multiple calls from an unknown number last Wednesday. A man who identified himself as a police officer provided his detailed police number and said he had been taken to a scam compound in Cambodia but had been released because he was carrying his Hong Kong police warrant card. He said he was at a local police station in Cambodia and asked for help from the relevant authorities.
After receiving the request for help, the Immigration Department stated it immediately contacted the Office of the Commissioner of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People’s Republic of China in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region and the Chinese Embassy in the Kingdom of Cambodia to understand the situation. The Security Bureau confirmed it had contacted the officer and that he was in Cambodia, adding that it would send staff to the country to help and further understand the incident.
