Macao’s weather bureau issued its first Black Rainstorm Warning of the year, while neighboring Hong Kong issued its fourth Black Rainstorm Warning in a single week, an unprecedented event.

The rain began in the early morning, with the Macao weather bureau issuing a Red Rainstorm Warning at 5:22 AM, which was upgraded to a Black Rainstorm Warning at 8:18 AM and remained in effect until 10:20 AM.

During the warning period, the bureau recorded over 80 millimeters of rainfall in most parts of the territory. The Dr. Sun Yat-sen Municipal Park and Coloane Downtown stations recorded 115.2 millimeters, and three other monitoring stations also recorded over 100 millimeters of rain.

Rainfall was equally intense in Hong Kong, where the Observatory upgraded its rainstorm warnings several times from yesterday evening, August 4th, to this morning. The Observatory issued its fourth Black Rainstorm Warning in a week at 5:50 AM, marking the first time this has ever happened.

The warning is expected to remain in effect until 3:00 PM. Many districts in Hong Kong have recorded over 100 millimeters of rainfall, leading to severe flooding in multiple areas. The Central and Western Districts on Hong Kong Island were particularly hard-hit, with some roads around Queen Mary Hospital experiencing serious flooding, which has affected emergency room services.
