Event Launch & Production Background
To inaugurate the 15th National Games, the Sands China Performing Arts Programme brought Guangzhou Song and Dance Theatre’s largescale “Dance Drama: Dragon Boat” to Macau for the first time on June 14-15.
Patronised by Guangdong and Macao cultural authorities, organised by Guangzhou Song and Dance Theatre and Macau Yifeng Entertainment Co., Ltd., and coorganised by Sands China Ltd., the production premiered at The Venetian Theatre, spotlighting a nationallevel stage drama themed on dragon boat racing.
Artistic Vision & Choreography
Drawing on traditional “mortiseandtenon craftsmanship” and ancient rower training systems, the creative team crafted powerful racing sequences through harmonious yet dynamic choreography.
Multimedia projections of swirling water waves and glistening dragon scales enhanced the performance’s visual impact, riding a wave of contemporary artistry to revitalize this intangible cultural heritage.
Cultural Significance & Regional Collaboration
The tour embodies the revitalization of cultural legacy by blending dragon boat spirit with modern expression. It underscores the GuangdongHong KongMacao Greater Bay Area’s ethos of “united collaboration,” amplifying cultural resonance in alignment with the 15th National Games and Macau’s identity as a hub of EastWest cultural exchange.
Distinguished Attendance
The premiere attracted a full house and prominent guests, including Dr. Wilfred Wong, Executive Vice Chairman of Sands China Ltd.; senior officials from Guangdong cultural departments; and leaders from Macao’s cultural, tourism, and academic sectors. Their presence marked the show as a milestone in Macau’s performing arts calendar.
Audience Engagement & Feedback
Audiences responded enthusiastically: one viewer noted the production offered a “stunning audiovisual feast” and a fresh perspective on Chinese festival culture, while a parent observed their child’s newfound passion for the dragon boat dance.
A postshow meetandgreet and booksigning extended this cultural exchange beyond the stage.
