Wong Wai Man, also known as the “Red Guard” for always dressing like one during elections, was preparing to run in the upcoming legislative elections in September when he was arrested by the PJ, as reported today by newspaper Ponto Final. The detention is related to the alleged illegal operation of a mahjong house in the Areia Preta area.

The PJ confirmed the arrest of a 61-year-old man with the surname Wong, suspected of running a venue that had two mahjong tables, which reportedly generated around MOP 8,800 in commissions over the past three months. In total, 13 people were detained. According to the PJ, Wong refused to make a statement, and the case has been forwarded to the Public Prosecutor’s Office.

The arrest occurred at a critical time for the formalization of the Mutual Help Grassroots candidacy, which was still attempting to gather the 300 valid signatures required by law. Although 395 signatures were submitted, the Electoral Affairs Commission of the Legislative Assembly validated only about 200, forcing the list to complete the process by the end of this Friday, June 13.

On social media, members of his list alerted yesterday that Wong Wai Man was unreachable, raising suspicions of a possible detention. In response, representatives of the group submitted formal requests to the Public Prosecutor’s Office and the RAEM Government, calling for the immediate release of their representative so he could complete the candidacy process within the legal deadline.

The Mutual Help Grassroots list represents a movement focused on social causes, such as employment and the well-being of the population, consisting of six candidates.
