CACM and ALAM forge strategic partnership to strengthen Lusophone Arbitration

In a landmark move to advance arbitration and mediation in Portuguese-speaking countries, the Arbitration, Conciliation and Mediation Centre (CACM) of Mozambique and the Lusophone Arbitration and Mediation Association (ALAM) have signed a cooperation protocol on May 20, 2025.

This collaboration aims to empower ALAM and CACM to jointly develop scientific activities in arbitration law and alternative dispute resolution, including the exchange of legal documentation, publications, and case law summaries.

Through initiatives such as training programs, international conferences, and research projects, both parties aim to improve professional expertise in arbitration and mediation, promoting legal harmonization in Portuguese-speaking jurisdictions.

Main Objectives of the Partnership:

  • Joint Academic Initiatives: The joint holding of training activities, conferences, meetings, discussion forums and draft studies or normative texts, on the subject of arbitration and other means of out-of-court dispute resolution.
  • Promote Knowledge Exchange: The exchange of documentation, publications and case law summaries from the respective countries on arbitration and other means of settling disputes out of court.

About CACM:

The Arbitration, Conciliation and Mediation Centre (CACM) of Mozambique is a non-profit institution, established in 2002 in Mozambique, with the aim of providing alternative and appropriate mechanisms for the prevention and resolution of commercial disputes and encouraging their use in other areas of activity.

About ALAM:

ALAM is a non-profit institution established in Macau (China), with the purpose of promoting, within the Portuguese speaking countries, the resolution, through mediation or arbitration, of cross-border disputes arising between:

  • Parties belonging to any of the Portuguese-speaking jurisdictions.
  • Parts belonging and parties not belonging to any of the Portuguese-speaking jurisdictions.

The Portuguese-speaking space covers all jurisdictions that have the Portuguese language as their own or one of their official languages.

ALAM has currently 203 members from 21 jurisdictions.

ALAM, based in Macau, has established cooperation agreements with the Portuguese Arbitration Association, the Brazilian Arbitration Committee, the CBMA – Brazilian Center for Mediation and Arbitration, and the Arbitration Center of the Chamber of Commerce, Industry, Agriculture, and Services (CA-CCIAS) of São Tomé and Príncipe, CAMARB – Chamber of Business Mediation and Arbitration – Brazil, the University of Saint Joseph, Mozambique Lawyers Bar, the Arbitration Channel and other agreements currently under negotiation.
