Flamengo players were targeted in a robbery attempt in the early hours of this Thursday (8), after landing in Rio de Janeiro, according to the club. The car carrying goalkeeper Agustín Rossi was hit by four gunshots. No one was injured.
According to the club, after arriving in the city around 5:30 a.m. from a Libertadores match in Argentina, several players’ cars were attacked in a robbery attempt on the Linha Amarela, near Bonsucesso, in Rio’s northern zone.
“The car carrying goalkeeper Rossi, which is armored, was struck by four shots. Despite the serious incident, the attempt did not succeed and none of the athletes or passengers were injured,” said the club.
Flamengo’s press office confirmed that all involved players are now at home.
In a statement, Rossi said he was “a victim of the lack of public safety that plagues Rio de Janeiro” and thanked fans for their messages.
The Military Police said that officers from the Highway Patrol Battalion conducted searches in the area and escorted some victims to the 21st Police Precinct, in Bonsucesso.
According to the Civil Police, two vehicles were stolen on the Linha Amarela on Thursday morning. Investigators have requested surveillance footage, and other measures are underway to identify the perpetrators.
