Macanese Platform

During this week’s reception for representatives of the Macanese community, the Chief Executive (CE) acknowledged that “the participation and support of the Macanese community will be necessary” to fulfill Macau’s role as a platform, according to the official statement.

While Neto Valente believes that the event simply “followed tradition,” Leonel Alves highlights the “reinforcement of the Macanese community’s sense of belonging to their homeland.” Although “without much novelty,” Miguel de Senna Fernandes admits he “quite liked” Sam Hou Fai’s speech, especially because “he spoke in Portuguese.”
“The local Macanese community, as part of Macau’s great family, has always played an indispensable role and made significant contributions to the city’s development,” said Sam Hou Fai in a speech that began in Portuguese before continuing in Chinese. The CE referenced President Xi Jinping’s speech during his visit to Macau and emphasized “the community’s contributions to Macau’s long-standing prosperity and stability.” Sam Hou Fai also commented that the opportunity to study in Portugal allowed him to “better understand the Macanese community—he realized that Macau is not only a place where generations of Macanese have lived but also a place they call home—where they built their families and careers, and where they see their dreams come true.”

Neto Valente summed it up: “It followed tradition,” adding that what he heard was “not newsworthy.” He noted that the CE’s definition of the Macanese community as those who “were born, grew up, and have lived in Macau for many years” might explain why they were included in the dinner. He also pointed out that the political message aligns with the Central Government: “He spoke about what he plans to do in governance, inspired by President Xi Jinping’s speech. That is the new era,” Valente concluded.

Leonel Alves praised Sam Hou Fai’s message: “He once again demonstrated the strengthening of the Macanese community’s sense of belonging to their homeland,” emphasizing that “the unique characteristics of this community are valued.” Therefore, “we must all join hands and unite our efforts in building the future, which will surely be promising and prosperous. Macau’s future is secure, and we must move toward the goals announced by the President of the People’s Republic of China, with the aim of transforming Macau into an international metropolis, a shining pearl on the South China Sea coast.”

“I liked it a lot,” concluded Miguel de Senna Fernandes, particularly because “this is the first time we’ve heard a speech from the CE in Portuguese, even if just as an introduction.” This gesture “immediately gave us a good impression and a sense of confidence. The community seems to breathe a different air, feeling closer to the CE, regardless of the speech’s content, which itself did not bring much novelty. It speaks of the community’s importance in Macau’s role as a bridge between China and Portuguese-speaking countries.” The “biggest novelty,” Senna Fernandes concluded, “is the good faith that was evident—the sincerity and the honest tone toward the Macanese community. Everyone shares this idea of feeling at ease with the CE.”
