Lula Suffers Brain Hemorrhage and Undergoes Emergency Surgery in São Paulo

Hematoma linked to a fall the president suffered in October; Lula remains in the ICU

President Lula (PT) experienced severe headaches on Monday night (9) and, after undergoing tests at the Sírio-Libanês hospital in Brasília, was transferred to the São Paulo unit for emergency surgery.

Following the procedure, he was taken to the ICU, where he remains under observation. He underwent a craniotomy to drain the hematoma, which was successful, according to a medical bulletin released by the institution. Lula was attended by doctors Roberto Kalil Filho and neurosurgeon Marcos Stavale and is now under the care of infectious disease specialist Ana Helena Germoglio.

The president began feeling unwell in the afternoon, complaining of headaches and drowsiness to ministers with whom he had meetings.

His last appointment was a meeting with the Speaker of the House, Arthur Lira (PP-AL), and the Senate President, Rodrigo Pacheco (PSD-MG). While he had initially planned to undergo tests on Tuesday morning (10), the worsening pain prompted an earlier visit to the hospital. First Lady Rosângela da Silva, known as Janja, accompanied him throughout.

In October, Lula suffered a fall in the bathroom of the Palácio da Alvorada, which required treatment and stitches. The bleeding occurred nearly two months later as a result of the domestic accident.
