50 years ago, humanity sent a message to aliens that has not yet arrived

Today marks 50 years since humanity sent the first radio message to extraterrestrials. The Arecibo message was sent during the inauguration of a major upgrade of the Arecibo radio telescope in Puerto Rico on the afternoon of November 16, 1974, and contained some basic information about the human race.

Conceived by Frank Drake with the help of Carl Sagan and members of the National Astronomy and Ionosphere Center, the radio signal sent into space had the symbolic objective of transmitting information about planet Earth and human civilization to a possible extraterrestrial civilization. The signal was sent just once, over a period of about three minutes, in a narrow beam aimed at a group of about 300,000 stars called the Great Hercules Cluster, or Messier 13, which is located 25,000 light-years away. away from Earth.
