Seven people, including two police officers, lost their lives in a high-speed collision on a highway in northern England during the early hours of Saturday morning, People reports.
The incident occurred at approximately 3:39 a.m. local time on the A66 highway near Middlesbrough. According to official reports from Cleveland Police, a car traveling on the wrong side of the dual carriageway collided head-on with a marked police vehicle.
Both officers inside the patrol car, identified as 37-year-old Matthew Blades and 38-year-old Tom Clough, died at the scene. All five occupants of the other vehicle, ranging in age from 17 to 23, were also killed.
The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash. Initial findings indicate that police units had been pursuing the vehicle for nearly seven minutes following reports that it was linked to multiple criminal incidents.

The pursuit was called off when the car crossed into oncoming traffic on the main road. The collision occurred roughly ten seconds later, striking the patrol car driven by Blades and Clough, who were assisting with the search in the area but were not actively participating in the vehicle pursuit.
Tributes have poured in from the local community and law enforcement colleagues following the tragic announcement. Senior police officials praised both officers for their selfless service and dedication to public safety.
Family members released personal statements remembering Clough for his humor and commitment to protecting others, while Blades was honored by his wife as a devoted husband, father, and dedicated public servant. Local youth soccer organizations where Blades volunteered as a coach also expressed profound grief, describing him as a mentor and role model to young players.
Investigators from the IOPC have gathered dashcam footage, radio logs, and statements from officers in the area as the inquiry into the sequence of events continues.
