Heads of State and Government of the CPLP invited to UN summit

The Heads of State and Government of the Community of Portuguese Language Countries (CPLP) shall meet at an informal summit at the ship of the UN General Assembly, in New York, confirmed the source of the presidency.

According to a document to which Lusa had access, the presidency, rotating, are-tomensian has already sent the invitations to the organization’s Membership Presidents to attend this meeting on Sept. 23 on the side of the week of the high debate level in the United Nations, which takes place on the week between 23 and 28 September, with other diplomatic sources advanced that the issue of assumption of the organization’s 2025 leadership of the organization will be one of the points on agenda.

But, according to St. Thomas and Prince’s Ambassador to the CPLP, a country that has the organization’s rotary presidency by 2025, the proposed September 23 date may not be seen, because the day of the informal summit “will have to be adjusted in accordance with the agendas of heads of state.”

Asked on subjects on the agenda of this meeting, Esterline Genre said unaware of so far what they are, but assured that they will not have to do with the organization’s future presidency.

On the sideline of the UN General Assembly, an informal meeting of foreign ministers and Foreign Affairs of the CPLP is held, but this year, the Presidency are tomian understood that an informal summit of heads of state would be important and of Government of the nine countries, have advanced other diplomatic sources.

The aim, according to the same sources, is to be a definitive decision on the site of the next summit, which will be in the country that will assume the organization’s presidency.

At the last meeting of Chiefs of State and Government, which took place in St. Thomas and Prince, in August 2023, when this country took over the presidency, it was decided that it would be Guinea-Bissau the next member state to take the lead, in 2025.

But, given the political situation in this country, the member states should now pronounce about the next summit site, which will be in the country that takes the future presidency of the community for two years.

Already this year, the CPLP’s Council of Foreign Ministers and Foreign Relations confirmed the site, Guinea-Bissau, and the date of July 17, 2025, for the achievement of the next summit.

However, according to diplomatic sources, the final decision is of the jurisdiction of heads of states and Government. Hence the appointment of this informal meeting in New York.

CPLP member states are Angola, Brazil, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau, Equatorial Guinea, Mozambique, Portugal, St. Thomas and Prince and Timor-Leste.
