The Annual Arts Exhibition organized by the Cultural Institute. This is one of the events included in the “5th Meeting in Macau – Festival of Arts and Culture between China and Portuguese-speaking Countries”.
Under the theme “Relations”, the exhibition brings together seven artists from Mainland China, Portugal, Brazil, Angola and Macau, presenting a total of 21 works including paintings, installations, videos and large-scale outdoor sculptures with each artist exploring their own relationship with Sino-Portuguese cultures and multiculturalism.
Public art works
This year is the first time that the public art works are included in the Annual Arts Exhibition between China and Portuguese-speaking Countries.
Portuguese artist Bordalo II turned trash into treasure by creating two large works of public art, using waste as a means to draw people’s attention to environmental protection issues.
One of his works is in the shape of a giant panda, a species unique to China, to reveal the festive characteristics of cultural exchange between China and Portuguese-speaking countries.
The artist’s two works will be exhibited in mid-December, in the historic revitalization areas of the Old Iec Long Panchões Factory and the Lai Chi Vun Naval Shipyards, respectively.

Zhou Wei, an artist from Mainland China, will present the “memory of Macao and in the form of time”, with his work in an innovative installation format, to discuss the internal symbiotic relationship of culture, between the past, present and future from Macau.
Artist Zhang Wenxin, also from Mainland China, created two autopoietic chrysalises, manifesting their wet forms in a network of generative confrontations between the real and the unreal.

Installations by two Macau artists, Mel Cheong and Lai Sio Kit, will showcase local creativity. Mel Cheong’s work explores each individual’s different interpretations of things, creating a colorful and diverse society.
Lai Sio Kit’s work portrays time and expresses the mark of time through painting, giving an aged and faded appearance to old floors.

Artists from Portuguese-speaking countries will present several new creations in this exhibition. The protagonist of the paintings by Brazilian artist Eduardo Fonseca, with bright colors and ingenious compositions, is the rabbit from the Chinese zodiac, portraying Chinese landscapes to present Chinese cultural imagery.

The paintings by Angolan artist Lino Damião, through the overlapping of geometric shapes and the use of special colors, represent, in an abstract way, Angolan urban culture and his memories of walks around the city.
