In a statement sent out late this morning, REN said that electricity consumption has been supplied by renewable sources since 22:30 on Friday. From that time until 00:00 on Saturday, 97.6 Gigawatt hours (GWh) of wind energy, 6.6 GWh of solar energy and 68.3 GWh of hydroelectric energy were generated, which “ensured the consumption of 137.1 GWh”.
“Production surpluses have been exported via the interconnector with Spain,” it added. REN adds that if the weather forecasts for today are confirmed, “everything points to the situation remaining the same and a whole weekend with 100% production from renewable sources and the export of energy to Spain”.
The company also stated that, since 09:00 on 24 October, electricity consumption in Portugal has been ensured by renewable energies, despite “resorting to importing electricity from Spain at certain times”. “The transition to full export took place on Friday, 27 October at 5 p.m., when Portugal became an exporter of electricity 100% of the time,” it said.
According to REN, for reasons of balance between generation and consumption, on the same day, two groups of two natural gas combined cycle thermal power stations went into operation between 16:00 and 22:30, “at the end of which electricity consumption in Portugal was supplied with 100% renewable production, and still with an export balance to Spain”.
