British remain kings of the market

There is still more than a month to go before the transfer market closes in most of the top leagues, but it is clear that English clubs will continue to reign supreme when it comes to signing players. The question is whether they will break the record set in the summer of last year, when they spent 2.25 billion euros on reinforcements.

So far, and transfers happen daily, the 20 clubs that make up the English Premier League have already spent a total of 1.08 billion euros. Just to give you an idea, it is almost the same amount that the other major European leagues (Spain, Italy, Germany and France) have spent all together so far.

The biggest spender in all of Europe is Arsenal, second in the English Premier League last season, which seems committed to, once again, trying to fight the dominance of Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City (it has won five of the last six championships). The London club has so far spent €231.6 million on signings.

The gunners, incidentally, are responsible for the most expensive signing in this market so far, with the 116.6 million euros paid to West Ham to guarantee the services of defensive midfielder Declan Rice. The team trained by Mikel Arteta also paid 75 million for Kai Havertz to Chelsea and 40 million to Ajax for Jurrien Timber.
