Shanghai records hottest May day in 100 years

Lusa

Shanghai today recorded the highest temperature reached during the month of May in a hundred years, announced today the meteorological department of the city, located in eastern China.

“At 13:09 (06:09 in Lisbon), the temperature at Xujiahui station reached 36.1 degrees, breaking a 100-year record for the highest temperature recorded in May,” said the official meteorological service.

A few hours later, the weather station in central Shanghai reached 36.7°C, according to the same source.

The temperature thus beat the previous record by one degree, which had been recorded four times, in 1876, 1903, 1915 and 2018.

In mid-May, the UN warned that the period 2023-2027 will almost certainly be the hottest ever recorded on Earth, under the combined effect of greenhouse gases and the climate phenomenon El Niño.

Global temperatures are expected to soon exceed the more ambitious target of the Paris climate agreements, the World Meteorological Organization has warned.
