The United States believes that UN Secretary General António Guterres is “too willing” to accept Russian interests, according to a BBC report based on secret US documents on Ukraine.
The BBC claims that the documents revealed on social networks contain remarks about António Guterres “and several African leaders” about the war in Ukraine, with one of the secret files referring to the transport of cereals that is part of the agreement signed last year between Ukraine and Russia, after the intervention of the UN and Turkey.
Reportedly, the document suggests that António Guterres was so interested in preserving the agreement that he was “willing to accept” Russia’s interests.
“Guterres highlighted efforts to improve Russia’s export capacity (…) even if this involved sanctioned Russian entities or individuals”, says the BBC quoting the same secret file.
Guterres’ actions last February, according to the assessment allegedly contained in the same US documents, were “undermining broader efforts to hold Moscow accountable for actions in Ukraine”.
According to the news signed by journalist Paul Adams, from the British public station, the secret documents made public recently suggest that Washington “has been closely monitoring” António Guterres.
“Several documents describe private communications involving Guterres” and the assistant secretary general of the United Nations, indicates the BBC in the news published today on the official portal of the station.
The BBC news also states that “UN officials [who are not identified] are clearly unhappy with the US interpretation of Guterres’ efforts”, stating that the UN secretary general made his “opposition to war” very clear.
On Tuesday, the Secretary of Defense of the United States, Lloyd Austin, said that the US Administration “takes very seriously” the investigation into the alleged Pentagon documents that were released on social networks.
“I can’t say much because the Department of Justice is investigating, but we take this matter very seriously,” said the top Pentagon official at a press conference.
During the last week, several documents from the United States military and intelligence services, dated February and March, related to the Russian invasion of Ukraine and with alleged details about the plans of the “West” to support Kiev, were published on social networks.
The documents, whose authenticity has not yet been officially confirmed, also point out that the United States monitored some of Washington’s allies, such as Ukraine, South Korea or Israel.
