Act “on all fronts” to “restore security”. Netanyahu retains defense minister

Yoav Gallant had been fired in March for opposing the reform of the judicial system proposed by the Israeli prime minister.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu promised this evening, in a televised address, to “restore security” in his country by acting “on all fronts”, after a further worsening of violence in the Middle East.

“We will not allow terrorist Hamas to settle in Lebanon,” Netanyahu added, after the Israeli army accused the Palestinian Islamist resistance movement of being responsible for launching dozens of rockets into northern Israel on Thursday.

Netanyahu also announced that he will keep his Defense Minister, Yoav Gallant, in office, after announcing his resignation in March due to a political dispute related to the reform of the judicial system.

During the television speech, the Israeli head of government indicated that he had decided to “overcome” the differences on a reform that ended up being suspended due to a wave of protests and a general strike that threatened to paralyze the country.

These statements coincide with an increase in tension in the region, after several days of violence that began last Wednesday when Israeli police attacked the Al-Aqsa mosque in Jerusalem and expelled, beat and arrested hundreds of Palestinians in the middle of Ramadan.

In response, Palestinian and pro-Palestinian militias launched dozens of ‘rockets’ (rockets) towards Israel, with the Jewish State Army responding with reprisal bombing.

Following the escalation, an Egyptian delegation traveled to the area on Sunday, with the aim of meeting with Israeli and Palestinian leaders in an attempt to calm tensions.
