The Secretary for Economy and Finance participated yesterday in a lecture promoted by the Commercial Association of Macau and outlined an optimistic economic scenario. However, he left out the possibility of launching a new round of the consumption card
The Secretary for Economy and Finance, Lei Wai Nong, believes that the economic recovery of the territory “is evident” and that consumers are increasingly optimistic. The statements were made during the opening speech of a lecture promoted by the Commercial Association of Macau.
From the perspective of the person responsible for the economy, quoted by the Chinese channel of Rádio Macau, the recovery was possible due to the “gradual relaxation” of restrictions on movement between Macau, the Interior and the rest of the world, which allowed for an increase in the number of tourists. “and a good start to the year”.
The secretary supported the statements by indicating that between January and February the number of tourists jumped to 2.9 million people, also noting the sharp growth of the markets of Hong Kong and Taiwan. This novelty does not come as a surprise, since since the beginning of the year the requirements for compliance with long quarantines at the entrance have been raised. The positive trend was also seen in gaming revenues, which reached MOP34.6 billion in the first quarter. The figure represents an increase of 94.4 percent over the same period last year.
