Winnie the Pooh horror film release canceled in Macau and Hong Kong

The release of the horror movie “Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey” has been canceled in Macau and Hong Kong, the distributor announced on Tuesday, raising questions about the censorship experienced in the two Chinese regions.

Chinese President Xi Jinping has been compared to the famous bear Winnie the Pooh – a character created by the British Alan Alexander Milne – since a meeting, in 2013, with the then US President, Barack Obama.

Far from the Disney (USA) and Soyuzmultfilm (Russia) studios, which made the character popular, the “Blood and Honey” version is a bloody adaptation of the British filmmaker Rhys Frake-Waterfield, released in February in the United States.

In a publication on the Facebook social network, distributor VII Pillars Entertainment expressed “deep regret” on Tuesday, not specifying what motivated the decision.
