The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry said today that Kiev is closely following Chinese President Xi Jinping’s visit to Russia and urged him to use his influence in Moscow to end the war in Ukraine.
“We hope that Beijing will use its influence over Moscow to put an end to the war of aggression against Ukraine,” said Ukrainian Ministry spokesman Oleg Nikolenko in a statement released today after Xi Jinping arrived in Moscow to a three-day official visit.
Nikolenko recalled that the Ukrainian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dmytro Kuleba, had a telephone conversation last Friday with his Chinese counterpart.
In this conversation with the Chinese official, Kuleba reaffirmed that the restoration of Ukrainian territorial integrity must be the “core” of any diplomatic effort.
“We are ready to start a closer dialogue with China to restore peace in Ukraine, in accordance with the principles enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations and the latest resolution of the General Assembly of the United Nations on this matter,” said the spokesman. -Ukrainian voice.
Xi Jinping will hold an informal meeting today with his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, before more formal talks on Tuesday.
China maintains an ambiguous position regarding the war in Ukraine. On the one hand, it defends Ukraine’s territorial integrity, but on the other, it says it takes Russia’s alleged security concerns into account.
