Macau appears on the trail of money linked to Sonangol, the Angolan state oil company, when it was controlled by Manuel Vicente, former vice president of Angola. According to a report in the latest edition of the weekly Expresso, Orlando José Afonso, Manuel Vicente’s partner, will have created an offshore structure from the Cayman Islands to hide several million euros, including two bank accounts in Macau, at Millenium BCP and at ICBC – Industrial and Commercial Bank of China. The Portuguese weekly had access to documents showing that the scheme to hide the money was created in 2018, after Manuel Domingos Vicente left the vice-presidency of Angola.

The documents in question come from Genesis Trust & Corporate Services, a company that provides services for the incorporation and management of offshore structures in the Cayman Islands. In the correspondence there is a reference to Orlando José Afonso “only by the initials of his name, OJV, Orlando José Veloso, identified as a PEP client, that is, a politically exposed person”, reads in the news.
