Hotel occupancy rate in Macau drops to 38.7% in November

The hotel occupancy rate in Macau was 38.7% in November, 7.8 percentage points less than the same month of the previous year, it was announced today.

In the month under review, the territory registered 409 thousand guests, that is, 17.2% less in annual terms, in the 37 thousand rooms available in the 119 hotels in the territory, indicated, in a statement, the Directorate of Statistics and Censuses (DSEC ).

Also in November, the number of guests from China (323,000) decreased by 19.8%, while that of locals (61,000) fell by 2.6%, he added.

Between January and November, the average occupancy rate of hotel rooms in the city was 38%, 11.6 percentage points less than the same period of the previous year. “Hotel establishments hosted 4,658,000 individuals, 22% less, compared to the same period in 2021 and the average period of stay of guests remained at 1.8 nights”, continued the statement.

The number of visitors has dropped dramatically in the territory since the beginning of the covid-19 pandemic.

Macau, which like the interior of China followed the ‘zero covid’ policy, betting on mass testing, confinement of risk zones and quarantines, announced this month the cancellation of most prevention and containment measures, after almost three years of strict restrictions.
