Barcelona president Joan Laporta once again showed himself in favor of a “more attractive, fair and competitive” and “based on meritocracy” European Superliga project, this Sunday at the club’s general meeting.
“With the Superliga, the clubs will govern their own destiny, we will be the ones who will organize the competition”, said Laporta during his opening speech at Barça’s ordinary general meeting, to which the 4,451 representatives of the club’s members were summoned.
“The situation of clubs is very worrying. We assume all costs and all risks,” said Laporta. “European football is in a negative dynamic in terms of the public and attracting new fans, young people attracted by other forms of leisure. If we add the state clubs, this creates a very delicate situation”, explained the Blaugrana manager.
“The Superliga will deal with all these problems and will provide a much more attractive, fair and competitive competition”, assured Laporta.
“It makes me laugh that state clubs say that those of us who are in the Superliga are the rich. The Superliga will be an open League, based on meritocracy, and that we will work to respect the state leagues”, he highlighted.
“I’m sure that if we can work freely, we’ll propose a format that everyone likes. Soon there will be a resolution and a path of dialogue will be opened”, insisted the president of Barça.
Laporta spoke of the decision that the EU Court of Justice in Luxembourg must take on an abuse of dominant position condemned by UEFA. The CJUE’s general council is due to give an advisory opinion on December 15th and the final decision is scheduled for early 2023.
