Guterres points to price stabilization and calls for demilitarization of Zaporijia

“Since the Russian invasion of Ukraine, I have been clear: there is no solution to the global food crisis without ensuring full global access to Ukrainian food products and Russian food and fertilizer. I want to express my gratitude to all parties for their support” in the implementation of the Black Sea grain export agreement, Guterres said at a press conference in Lviv, Ukraine, alongside Ukrainian Head of State Volodymyr Zelensky and Turkish President , Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

“We have seen signs that global food markets are starting to stabilise. Wheat prices fell by as much as 8% after the agreements were signed. The FAO [Food and Agriculture Organization] Food Price Index dropped 9% in July – the biggest drop since 2008. Most food ‘commodities’ are trading at prices below pre-war levels” , stressed Guterres.
