Terrorists tried to invade penitentiaries in Cabo Delgado

Insurgents in Cabo Delgado threatened to assault the Mieze prison establishment and the Mocímboa da Praia and Macomia prisons, the largest in the province.

The information was confirmed on Monday by the Ministry of Justice, Constitutional and Religious Affairs (MJACR).

According to minister Helena Kida, the armed invasion was fought by agents who “did not frighten or coward themselves, having shown bravery and courage that prevented the attacks planned by the terrorists”. The minister added that, on two occasions, security agents resisted “the attempted assault on the establishments and ensured the evacuation of 89 prisoners to a safe place”.

The work carried out against the Cabo Delgado insurgents led to the promotion of 24 of the agents, explained Helena Kida. Due to insecurity, the Macomia and Mocímboa da Praia prisons are partially closed.

The province of Cabo Delgado, northern Mozambique, has been the scene for three years of armed attacks unleashed by forces classified as terrorists and which have intensified this year.

There are different estimates for the number of deaths, ranging from 1,000 to 2,000 victims. According to official figures, there are at least 435,000 internally displaced persons.
