Macy Gray wants to use his soul diva voice to say that black lives matter

Singer who performs at the Rio festival Montreux Jazz creates foundation to defend victims of police violence

Macy Gray is very busy during the pandemic, inside and outside the studio.

One of the soul divas of the 21st century, the singer has spent the past few months recording the debut album for her new band, California Jet Club. She used her famous hoarse voice, defined by the Allmusic website as something between Billie Holiday and Tina Turner, to sing a love song to be released in the early days of January – the single will be the album’s first working track, which comes out on the day of the Northern Hemisphere, February 14.

Being part of a band for the first time in many years was an exciting process, says the singer, in an interview with Zoom. She also claims to have felt a lot of freedom in “not having to be Macy Gray” for a while, as the band is an unprecedented project and will not carry her name, although she is the lead singer.
