Catholic Church says it is “immoral” to call elections in Venezuela

Venezuelan bishops issued a statement yesterday saying that it is “immoral” to call elections in the country due to the Covid-19 crisis and pandemic, and denounce human rights violations of the population of Venezuela.

“It is immoral to hold elections when the people suffer the consequences of a pandemic, they lack minimum conditions for subsistence, and there is no transparency in the rules and verification mechanisms that should govern an electoral process,” they say.

The document released by the Venezuelan Episcopal Conference (CEV) refers to the parliamentary elections called for December 6, underlining that “far from contributing to a democratic solution to the political situation, it tends to worsen it”.
