More than 1,700 passengers and crew members are currently confined to an Ambassador Cruise Line ship docked in Bordeaux, France, following a suspected norovirus outbreak and the death of an elderly passenger.

The vessel arrived in the southwestern French port late Tuesday night, May 12, 2026, where health authorities immediately issued a prevention order to isolate all those on board.

The situation began to escalate during the ship’s transit from Brest. Among the 1,233 passengers—the majority of whom are British and Irish nationals—approximately 50 individuals reported severe gastrointestinal symptoms, including vomiting and diarrhea.

Tragically, a 90-year-old passenger died during the voyage.

French health officials are investigating whether the death was directly caused by the suspected infection.

  • Suspected Pathogen: Norovirus, a highly contagious virus often associated with closed environments like cruise ships, is the primary suspect. Laboratory tests are currently being processed to confirm the strain.

  • Onboard Status: In addition to the passengers, 514 crew members are under confinement. Public health teams have boarded the ship to monitor the symptomatic individuals and oversee disinfection protocols.

  • Itinerary Disruption: The ship, identified as part of the “Delights of Western France & Spain Explorer” route, departed from the Shetland Islands on May 6. It completed stops in Belfast, Liverpool, and Brest before reaching Bordeaux. Its scheduled departure for Spanish ports has been suspended indefinitely pending health clearance.

This incident comes at a time of heightened sensitivity regarding health on cruise liners. While this specific outbreak appears to be a common, albeit severe, case of gastrointestinal illness, it follows a separate and more lethal outbreak of Andes hantavirus aboard the MV Hondius earlier this month in the Atlantic.

Health agencies, including the WHO and ECDC, have stressed that the two events are unrelated, but the proximity of these incidents has led to rigorous enforcement of quarantine and testing protocols across European ports.

French authorities have not yet provided a timeline for when passengers will be allowed to disembark.
