China sentences third Canadian to capital punishment

A third Canadian citizen was on Thursday sentenced to death in China for drug production and trafficking, a court in the south of the country announced, at a time of diplomatic tension between Ottawa and Beijing.

The Canadian citizen, identified in Mandarin as Xu Weihong, was tried in the first instance for “drug production”, according to the Canton Intermediate Court.

Chinese diplomacy spokesman Wang Wenbin emphasized to the press that the case “should not have consequences for relations between China and Canada”.
